About Us

The Sikkim Handicrafts & Handloom Development Corporation (SHHDC), as the name suggests is an organisation that attempts to develop and promote the indigenous crafts of the region by connecting craftsmen to prospective markets and consumers and generating economic, cultural and social opportunities for creators while adding cultural value for consumers.100 % shareholding is of The Government of Sikkim.

The organisation procures handicrafts and handlooms from artisans and weavers across the region and retails the same through its Sales Emporiums.Established in the year 2003 under Companies Act 1961.

Crafts such as wood carving, Thangka painting, cane & bamboo weaving, carpet making, mask production, and more, all with a monthly stipend to empower local youth. These initiatives not only channel traditional skills—like the Lepcha use of nettle yarn for backstrap looms and vibrant vegetable dyes—but also aim to provide sustainable livelihoods and economic independence for rural and marginalized communities.

Despite facing challenges like limited infrastructure, raw-material scarcity, youth migration, and competition from machine-made products, the state continues to support its artisans via subsidies, e-commerce initiatives, eco-branding, and strategic marketing—a concerted effort to brand Sikkim handicrafts globally while preserving cultural identity.

The craftsmanship is exceptional, and I love supporting the artisans behind these beautiful Sikkimese handlooms.

A craftsman is engaged in block printing on a large piece of fabric. He works meticulously with wooden stamps to create intricate floral patterns. The workshop has a traditional and rustic ambiance, with other workers in the background focused on similar tasks. The workspace is filled with various wooden tools and completed textiles, and it is lit with overhead lights.

I appreciate the dedication to preserving Sikkimese culture and the quality of their handmade products.
